Humpback Rocks Hike

Family picture on the trail down.

After picking apples at Carter’s Mountain Orchard on Saturday, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and proximity to the Blue Ridge.  Hiking together is a favorite family activity, and a perfect way to celebrate Keith’s birthday!  The kids were a little tired (especially Kourey, where “little” is an understatement), but voted to hike.

Keith had checked out hikes near Charlottesville, so we knew we wanted to do the Humpback Rocks hike at MP 6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  The weather and proximity to I-64 made this hike very popular; we passed and were passed by many, many, many people and dogs.

"Watch and you'll see, someday I'll be, part of your world!"

Before we even made it to the trail Kourey was lying prostrate on a large rock next to the trail, then lifted her head and upper body on her arms and wailing/singing something.  It took me a second, as she flattened herself back down and started her unintelligible song, but Kaitlyn ran right over to join her.  Once it clicked, it was obvious.  When you come upon a rock like that, how can you NOT pretend to be the Little Mermaid pushing herself out of the ocean and singing about being Part of Your World?

The trail has an elevation gain of 800′ over one mile, so parts were pretty steep for little legs.  The beautiful fall leaves made parts a little slippery, too.  But when we got to top we were rewarded with a great view.  The leaves may be past peak, but they looked gorgeous from where we stood!

The view from the summit

We doled out the bribes (sausage balls and water and a chance to use the camera) before we began our descent, back to the car, back to the piedmont, and back to home.
